SS's Vocal Navy Ribbons must successfully demonstrate:
- PST, Part 1, Section I: Sustained Tones (#1-2: Diatonic and Chromatic Scales)
- PST, Part 1, Section II: Intervals (#3-9: Major Second through Octaves)
- Pitch/Sight-singing: do re mi fa sol la ti do, do ti la sol fa mi re do; do re, do mi, do fa, do sol, do la, do ti, do do (movable)
- Physical Warm-up (stretching, “body as an instrument”)
- Posture (upright posture)
- Respiration (“Singer’s breath” vs. “scared” and “sleepy” breaths; exhale to increasing number of counts— 2, 4, 8 beats)
- Phonation (spoken and sung sound in upper, lower, and middle registers)
- Resonant tone production ([u, i, a] vowels)
- Diction (spoken tongue twisters and consonant sounds)
- Expression (forte & piano in singing and speaking)
- Complete 5 Step Song Learning Pattern (speak words alone like a poem, hum melody alone, sing melody on [i, a, u], speak-sing words in rhythm, sing song with words)
- Recommended Rep.: Folk Songs for Solo Singers, Vol. 1: young beginner (ages 5-7) selections plus p. 8, p. 32, p. 28 (medium low key) Max Range—octave and a 4th; Max Tessitura—5th or 6th
